Mustang Work Page 2

The other page was getting very slow to load.  I'll start another page.  The first page does have a new picture on it.  A much better view of the repaired battery corner.  As I was working on the front end I discovered that someone over the checkered past of this machine had welded the spring perch bolts and three of the nuts on the A-frame.  I don't see how this suspension could work as it should.  This meant that I had to remove everything.  As you can see All suspension and steering components are off.  (11/26/00 back in place) I cleaned up the steering gear box and cross-link.  All of this seems to be in good shape so it goes back on when I get everything cleaned up.  There is nearly a half inch of grease and dirt on everything under here. It is all clean now.

The frame inside the shock towers was bad.  The right side is shown but it was actually the best.  The left side was almost gone.  This is really a dumb design as all the dirt and salt and slop ends up trapped here with no way out.  Rot, Rot Rot. Grrr...   I'm still trying to think of a good way to fill this up so it will self-clean. BTW I made my own repair pieces and painted everything with Corroless from Eastwood.  This paint really latches on and comes out very smooth. ( The visible patch on the right side was put on by the previous owners).

The fire wall in this car was a mess.  There was a layer of stuff, undercoat, paint, dirt, grease, you name it.  As you can see I finally got it cleaned up.  I think it took about two weeks of spare time work. It sure looks better now. I suppose the noise level will be up. I really need to pull the engine.

Clean firewall

The final bit of news is that I have acquired a T5 transmission.  It would be nice to have a five-speed for the overdrive.  I keep making this project more and more complicated. Sigh.

Summer 2001

I have four wheels on the car. Of course, these wheels are ONLY for pushing the car around they are not for driving. I plan on using styled-steel wheels for the car eventually. These pictures show the progress made over the last few months. The brakes are fully plumbed with stainless steel tubing but there is no fluid in the system. I'm really working on the body now. I'm hoping to paint it next spring.

The two pictures show the completed front end with the disk caliper in place. The second picture shows that the gas tank is now installed.

These show the car outside the garage for the first time in 4 years. It has been on blocks the whole time. This is also the first time you've seen the right side of the car. In the garage it is very difficult to photograph the right side. I have mocked up the fenders. door, front valance and stone deflector but no pictures yet.

11/2002 In the paint shop!! In the second picture you see why one usually needs a pro to do the final bodywork. I thought I had it flat. I was wrong. I'm sure glad Greg is doing the final touches and painting.

4/11/2004

Well it has been a long time but progress is being made. Greg has ended up redoing most of my bodywork. Oh well I never said that I was a bodyman. The goal is to get the paint on it by the end of April.

This picture was taken last September. Progress has been made since then. BTW Greg is doing this in his spare time something he does not have a lot of so I really appreciate his work.

Well it is into August and we finally have some progress. It is at the Ford dealer's bodyshop and work in being done. Today, 8/21/04 the underside of the hood and the trunk were painted. The color seems right!!

Monday we should get insides of doors etc and maybe car. Progress is a great feeling. Greg is sweating the details.

9/23/2004

On September 23 & 24 the car was painted and is being polished. The color is just what I wanted. It really depends on the viewing angle and light. It will be brought back home on Saturday 9/25/2004. I will then begin rebuilding the car. More later!

Dreams?

I am fascinated by a triple carb setup.  It is possible to buy the complete setup from Pony Carburetors. I am debating between this and the spread bore 4-barrel carburetor they make.  I know tri-powers have many problems but if you grew up with 3-2s being the hot-setup for your Ford flathead V8, you'd be hooked on them too.

Stay tuned!
